Abolish planning supervisors from CDM, says CC

The abolition of planning supervisors from the Design and Management Regulations (CDM) is the demand made today (Friday) by the Construction Confederation (CC) in its contribution to the Health & Safety Executive's Revitalising Health and Safety in Construction discussion document.

The CC claim that planning supervisors fail to add significant value to health and safety management on site and suggests their duties should pass to the clients who would become accountable for health and safety co-ordination on their projects.

This would encourage clients to adopt an integrated team approach in order to discharge their new legal responsibilities.

CC director of Health and Safety Andy Sneddon said: "Clients are the driver in economic terms, and it makes sense that they should be accountable for health and safety co-ordination on their projects.

"The industry has the expertise to design, plan, and manage safe and healthy projects. Clients need to know that they must purchase on this basis, as much as quality and price."
