Amey to hand maintenance work back to Network Rail
Amey will hand part of its west of England railway maintenance
contract back to Network Rail in two months' time. The Railtrack
replacement wants to bring three of its 20 maintenance zones
in-house so that it can check whether or not it is getting best
value for money from its private contractors.
John Armitt, chief executive of Network Rail, said: "The decision
is not a reflection upon Amey as a maintenance provider." Mel
Ewell, Amey's chief operating officer, added: "We do not anticipate
any material effect on Amey's 2003 financial performance."
The "Reading area" lies within the Great Western Zone. It includes
the main line from Paddington to Didcot as well as branch lines to
Windsor and Marlow, plus the cross-country route from Reading to
Oxford. Amey also has rail maintenance contracts in the West
Midlands.
A spokesman for Network Rail said: "We want this area back in house
so that we have a comparator on costs with all the others. It is an
area with everything: quiet suburban lines, a busy link to London,
as well as freight."
