Amec/A McAlpine team quits M2 PFI road deal
A consortium featuring the successful Amec/Alfred McAlpine pairing
has pulled out of bidding for a high-profile private finance road
deal in Kent.
The Road Management Group (RMG), which includes Brown & Root
and Spanish contractor Dragados, has withdrawn from the Highways
Agency's (HA) £73m-plus Stockbury (M2) to Sheerness
project.
An insider said: "The group is committed to the A1 Darrington to
Dishforth DBFO in Yorkshire. The word is that the group's resources
would have been stretched too far if it also went for the M2
project, which includes designing a high-level bridge between the
Kent mainland and the Isle of Sheppey."
RMG's record on winning private finance deals is impressive and its
departure from the M2 fray will be welcome news to the other three
groups left in the race: the Laing, Hochtief and Babtie team;
Connect - Balfour Beatty and Atkins; and Carillion.
The HA is expected to name its preferred bidder in the autumn, with
work on site starting in spring 2004. Completion is due in 2006.
