Carillion judged the fairest of them all

Maxwell Stewart singles out Carillion as being a good contractor to work for.

"We enjoy working with Carillion," he says. "It is fair. We only want to be treated fairly as there will always be problems. When we put our hand up and say that we have a problem, we find it easy to offer Carillion a solution and ask: 'What do you think?' Ninety per cent of the time, it says 'yes' to our proposals. On other occasions we do the listening. It's how contracting should be done."

Stewart only lists the horror players that he avoids on condition their names are left out of print.

Half the group's workload is won from main contractors, the balance is directly with clients.

About 90% of the workload is for repeat clients. "Our competitors say that our market is depressed, but we have a good orderbook going through into 2004. We're in both the commercial and industrial markets, the policy being to avoid a scattergun approach to the industry."
