MCG reshuffles core contractor focus

The Major Contractors Group (MCG) is considering reshuffling its core contractor focus in what is believed to be a move to save its declining membership.

The proposals, which have yet to be finalised at senior level, will see the group steer towards service provision rather than just traditional contractor issues. A decision is expected within weeks.

However, some industry sources believe the plans have been drawn up to cater for a decline in membership which is now down to 20 following the departures of Alfred McAlpine, Birse, Laing and Balfour Beatty over the last two years.

Consultants will also be expected to play a greater role with the group, providing an anticipated boost in membership.

The move might also coincide with a rumoured merger between the Association of Consulting Engineers British Consultants and Construction Bureau - a decision which has been denied by both groups despite growing speculation.

"The MCG is realising that it needs to change with the market as more contractors are changing their businesses," said a source. "Widening the focus could see vast growth for the group."

McAlpine blamed its departure from the MCG last April on a membership format which was "no longer right for the group".

It added that following its acquisition of both facilities management and utility services, "McAlpine is a far broader company than just a contractor".

MCG director Bill Tallis was unavailable for comment.
