Workers 'incensed' as strike looms at Hanson
TGWU and GMB union leaders have started procedures to call a ballot
for industrial action at Hanson following the overwhelming
rejection of a pay offer to the company's brick manufacturing
operatives.
GMB national secretary Alan Black said the pay offer had been
rejected by a 10:1 majority. He forecast that strike action could
hit brick supplies just as site activity picks up for the
spring.
Black said the workers were particularly incensed because the
company had reneged on last year's agreement that gave an extra
day's holiday. The actual pay offer was worth about 2.8% over 12
months.
TGWU national secretary Bob Blackman said: "We are now seeking
another ballot for industrial action." He said the company had
sought to claim that the extra day's holiday was granted for last
year alone and that there was a misunderstanding about its being
retained. "That's nonsense," said Blackman.
