World Trade Center designer named

A designer has been chosen for the World Trade Center site in New York, according to one news report today (Thursday).

The BBC claims that German architect Daniel Libeskind has been given the green light by the Lower Manhattan Development Corporation.

Designs include a complex of angular towers and a 541m-high spire, topped with gardens, which would be among the world's tallest structures .

The winner beat-off competition from New York-based architects Rafael Vinoly and Frederic Schwartz, which proposed two decorative steel towers in memory of the twin towers destroyed in the 11 September 2001 terrorist attacks.

Even though the Libeskind design has been selected, officials will need more debates and further refinements to the original plans.

Construction is expected to start by 2005 at the earliest.

However, questions remain over what to do with the 6.4ha site in lower Manhattan, with many residents calling for a memorial to those who lost their lives.
