TRADA research to benefit construction industry

TRADA Technology is leading a research project that aims to reduce the costs and environmental impact of the distribution and storage of timber and wood-based products.

Each year the UK consumes some 14m m3 of softwood, hardwood and panel-based products, yet there has never been a comprehensive study in the UK to evaluate the potential benefits of improved supply chain management.

"Although the UK is committed to reducing CO2 emissions, energy used in the transport of construction products actually increased by around 25% between 1985 and 1995. This project will make an important contribution to reducing the environmental impact of the distribution and storage of wood and wood products," said project manager Stephen Riddiough.

The project includes a detailed series of case studies involving companies from a range of timber associated sectors.

"This study will, in time, benefit the timber industry as a whole, its customers and in particular the construction industry. By recommending ways to establish a leaner supply chain, it will help to reduce the energy involved in transporting timber and construction products and will therefore make a significant contribution towards achieving sustainable construction," added Riddiough.

Partners in the project include the Timber Research and Development Association, the Timber Trade Federation, A W Jenkinson, United Kingdom Forest Products Association and the Wood Panel Industries Federation.
