Construction fatalities are falling, but London still witnesses the most deaths, according to latest figures released by the Health & Safety Executive today (Friday).
Figures for the nine months from April to December 2002 show that 49 construction workers were killed compared to 59 during the previous nine months. Of the 2002 figure, 39 were employees and 10 were self-employed.
Five members of the public died due to construction, up one from the figure from the previous year.
There were 10 fatalities in London, and nine in the North West. The remaining figures include: eight deaths in Scotland (nine deaths in 2001), the Midlands (13 deaths in 2001) and Yorkshire & the North East; six in the East and South East; and five across Wales and the South West (six deaths in 2001).
