Birse takes lead in Sheffield

Birse is heading a field of seven runners for a £22m road scheme in South Yorkshire.

Insiders say the contractor is looking good for phase two of the city council's Sheffield Inner Relief Road project.

The contract is going forward as a partnering deal between the council and the winning contractor, with the company getting involved throughout the design stage.

A start on site is expected in July 2004, with completion expected by August 2006.

The job includes a 1.8km dual carriageway relief road to the north of the city centre and features a number of junctions controlled by traffic signals.

The six other contenders left licking their wounds are Alfred McAlpine, Balfour Beatty, Costain, Mowlem, Nuttall and Kier.
