Machine control specialist Topcon has introduced the TS5-3DMC
- said to be the first fully automated machine control system for
excavators.
By adding GPS to a system that automatically controls an
excavator's bucket, the new system allows contractors to dig to the
required grade anywhere on the site directly from site plans, with
accuracy better than 4cm.
Using the TS5-3DMC eliminates the need for setting out and the
company said automatic machine control systems can give up to 50%
savings compared to manual systems.
Topcon expects the TS5-3DMC to be used on projects involving
difficult slopes, when working around existing constructions and in
situations with restricted visibility such as underwater work.
To overcome directional problems with GPS caused by the
excavator superstructure rotating, Topcon fitted GPS antennae on
either side of the excavator to accurately identify
direction.
In addition, the TS5-3DMC system uses specifically designed machine
control software that can handle the site data on hardware
specifically developed with a very bright colour screen.
