Machine control specialist Topcon has introduced the TS5-3DMC,
which the company claims is the first fully automated machine
control system for excavators.
By adding GPS to a system that automatically controls the
excavator's bucket, the new system allows contractors to dig to the
required grade anywhere on site directly from plans, with accuracy
better than 4cm.
The TS5-3DMC eliminates the need for setting out and the company
said automatic machine control systems can give up to 50% savings
compared to manual systems. Topcon expects the TS5-3DMC to be used
on projects involving difficult slopes, when working around
existing constructions and in situations with restricted
visibility, such as underwater work.
To overcome directional problems with GPS caused by the excavator
superstructure rotating, Topcon has fitted GPS antennae on either
side of the excavator to accurately identify direction.
In addition, the TS5-3DMC system uses specifically designed machine
control software that can handle the site data on hardware
specifically developed with a very bright colour screen.
n Topcon will show its new low-cost RL-H3CS sloping laser at SED.
The unit's manual slope function means it can mark out any
combination of X and Y slopes and store the setting allowing users
to take a break without resetting the next time it is switched on.
