Port projects to be speeded up under new planning framework

Port development projects could be speeded up under a new 'Project Appraisal Framework' released today (Thursday) by the Department for Transport.

The framework, which will be used across England and Wales, is designed to be used by promoters of port projects when they are seeking planning and other construction-based approvals.

Public inquiries should now become more transparent and focussed to the benefit of promoters, objectors and decision-makers - privately-financed projects will also feature strongly in the framework's structure.

Work covered will be all port developments that will service merchant ships, fishing vessels and leisure craft.

The publication of this framework follows consultation undertaken last year with port operators, port users, environmental groups, local authorities and other interested parties.
