Site death inquest finds 'systematic failures in safety'
An Indian-born labourer who fell more than 10m through a glass roof
died after "systematic failures" in safety working practices, an
inquest at Southwark Coroners Court decided last week.
Inderjit Singh, 25, of Belvedere, Kent, was working for Drilling
and Bush Hammering Company on an English Heritage project to create
a museum on the old Woolwich Arsenal site on 15 June 2000 when the
incident happened.
Singh was trying to operate an angle grinder when the electrical
lead became disconnected.
As Singh clambered over the roof towards the lead, he fell through
a skylight to the ground, suffering multiple injuries. He died four
days later in the Royal London Hospital.
The Health & Safety Executive said a prosecution "is still
possible", while Singh's uncle is understood to be pursuing a civil
action.
