Amec M&E staff in walkout threat at T5
Electricians at the £5bn Heathrow Terminal Five site are
threatening to walk off site if a dispute with Amec over travel
allowances is not resolved. The dispute centres on allowances for
electricians travelling home to the North East region.
Amec's policy is to pay electricians travelling to Newcastle the
cost of a fare to Manchester. But electricians are saying this does
not cover the cost of their travel.
One told CJ: "Amec says it is because it has no 'shop' in
Newcastle, but it has one in Manchester. It also has a 'shop' in
Glasgow. Why then, doesn't it base the fare from Glasgow, rather
than Manchester? Or better still, why not enter the 21st century
and just pay everyone what it costs for it to travel home? This
attitude towards the workforce is totally outdated."
An Amec spokesman said: "Amec pays travelling time, fares and
allowances in accordance with JIB national working rules."
Electricians are meeting with the union this week to discuss a
course of action.
