Tradesmen demand long hours
Skilled tradesmen are not being forced to work long hours - it is
the opposite, with individuals demanding to be offered a seven-day
week.
Chief executive David Hills said: "Wages for electricians and
plumbers and the like are going through the roof. A tradesman in
Scotland is running at £30,000, while in central London the
figure is £60,000. But these people are putting in long hours.
"Not only do they want a seven-day week, they demand it, because
they get double pay on Sundays. At Hills we're paying the going
rates."
Hills has teams working countrywide, from headquarters in Walsall
and 15 branches, including ones in Glasgow and Edinburgh. The group
is owed £14,000 by Melville Dundas, the Scottish contractor
that went into receivership two weeks ago, and recognised it has
got away lightly.
