Action needed to train and keep tilers
The Clay Roof Tile Council (CRTC) is urging the roofing industry to
recruit and retain more skilled tilers.
The rate of new roof tiling trainees completing their training has
fallen sharply from 125 in 1988 to one in 1996, when the figures
were last recorded. Coupled with an aging workforce, the CRTC is
concerned that the industry could soon find itself with a
significant lack of skilled tilers to carry out roofing projects to
the accepted industry standard.
CRTC chairman Neil Tobin said: "It is essential that the industry
recognises that this increasing shortage represents a serious
problem and takes proactive steps to encourage more young people
into apprenticeships before the problem reaches a critical stage.
Roof tiling is a specialist trade, which requires technical and
practical training."
