Nuttall/Norwest fined over site accident
Two major construction contractors were fined more than
£50,000 at Bedford Magistrates Court last week following an
accident during construction of the A6 Clapham Bypass.
Subcontractor John Stuart, of Glasgow, sustained serious back
injuries when he was struck by a steel bar that fell while it was
being lifted into position by a crane on to a bridge pier under
construction.
He has not been able to return to work since the incident on 4
February 2002.
Edmund Nuttall and Norwest Holst Construction pleaded guilty to
breaching Section 3(1) of the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974 in
that they failed to ensure the safety during lifting operations of
those not in their employment.
They also pleaded guilty to contravening Regulation 8 of the
Lifting Operations and Lifting Equipment Regulations 1998, by
failing to properly plan, supervise and carry out a lifting
operation safely.
Each company was fined £25,500.
