Europinion predicts entry
Just one in nine Contract Journal readers believe Britain will
never join the euro, despite the Chancellor of the Exchequer's "not
yet" verdict on euro entry and opinion polls showing that most
British people want to keep the pound.
Last week, Gordon Brown signalled that four of his five economic
tests of Britain's readiness to join the euro had not been passed.
But Prime Minister Tony Blair said entry was still possible in this
Parliament.
In the latest CJ Question poll, sponsored by Semple, readers were
asked whether they thought Britain would join the euro in five
years, 10 years, eventually or never.
Nearly half of respondents were convinced Britain would adopt the
euro within five years. Some 17% said it would take up to 10 years
for Britain to join the single European currency, and 24% think the
euro is inevitable - eventually.
Only 11% of CJ readers polled thought Britain would never abolish
the pound.
