The shortlist for the £100,000-a-year chief executive post at Constructing Excellence is now down to seven from around 200 initial responses.
Final round interviews will be held this week to draw up a shortlist of three candidates.
A final decision is expected in two weeks' time as the Construction Best Practice and Rethinking Construction organisations combine to help promote initiatives pioneered by Sir John Egan.
CJ has learnt that the appointment is likely to involve someone away from the industry.
An unnamed source said: "The way the interviewing is going there is a growing opinion that certain people in the industry aren't up to the required job, so the recruitment team will need to look outside. One or two have already caught the eye."
