Small and medium-sized contractors are clueless about their impact on the environment. Only 4% of smaller contractors surveyed thought they undertook any activities that may be harmful to the environment.
The survey, carried out by government agency NetRegs, also revealed that just 16% of the 332 contractors interviewed could name any environmental legislation unprompted.
Just 13% have implemented any measures aimed at reducing harm to the environment; more than half of these contractors have given a member of staff responsibility for environmental issues.
Only 17% have an environmental policy in place.
