Main contractor Hochtief will today (Tuesday) start work on its £24m project for a new bridge to improve access to Paddington Station.
The new six-lane bridge will also have two pedestrian footways and will replace the section of Bishop's Bridge Road which spans railway tracks, a goods yard and canal in west London.
It is being built to take on increased traffic and pedestrian numbers around Paddington and will also form an important part of the forthcoming Crossrail project.
A new bridge to divert traffic from residential roads was promised when the Heathrow Express won approval in 1991.
The total cost of the work is being funded by Westminster City Council, BAA and Network Rail.
Construction will begin next week with completion set for spring 2006.
