Two builders injured after wall collapse

Two builders were injured yesterday (Tuesday) after a section of wall fell from a Liverpool city centre building.

The two injured men, who were steel erectors working for a subcontracting company believed to be carrying out work on behalf of contractor Allenbuild, were renovating a shop near Williamson Square when a section of wall fell on them from 10m.

One of the men, aged 40, was trapped beneath the rubble. His colleague, 52, was hit by bricks but managed to free himself.

Fire crews raced to the scene and performed a "snatch rescue" on the trapped man - removing him as quickly as possible in case of further falling bricks.

Both men were taken to the Royal Liverpool Hospital.

The trapped man suffered leg and arm injuries and the man who freed himself suffered head, neck and back injuries.

An investigation into the incident was launched by the Health & Safety Executive and a Liverpool City Council structural surveyor will today make an inspection of the site.
