Council signals go-ahead for £100m Cardiff football stadium

Cardiff County Council has scored a goal for the construction industry by signalling its intent to give the go-ahead for a £100m football stadium in the city.

The new stadium, to replace Ninian Park, will provide a new 30,000 all-seater home for newly promoted Cardiff City FC. The complex will also be capable of accommodating 60,000 people for special events.

The development, on a 25ha site, will also feature 150 homes, an athletics stadium, shopping complex, hotel and fitness club.

And it is understood that there are plans to redevelop Ninian Park for housing.

The Welsh Assembly will now run the rule over the scheme and decide whether it should be called in for further consideration.

No date has yet been set for inviting contractors to prequalify for the deal.

Holder Mathias is the master planner for the scheme, with consultant Arup Sport responsible for the design and specification of the new soccer stadium. Arup is structural engineer and the RPS group is planning consultant.
