Conservation & Restoration of
Arnos Vale Cemetery - Bristol
Bristol City Council in partnership with The Arnos Vale
Cemetery
Trust are seeking tenders from five consultants (architect,
landscape architect, structural engineer, quantity
surveyor and an ecologist) to progress with the restoration
of
a major historic cemetery of national importance in Bristol.
Arnos Vale cemetery was established by an Act of Parliament
in
1937 and was one of the earliest private provincial cemeteries
in
the country. It covers some 45 acres of steep landscaped
hillside
and is included within the English Heritage Register of Parks
and
Gardens of Special Historic Interest (grade 2). It incorporates
22
significant grade II and II* listed chapels, gate houses, tombs
and
monuments of distinction, all within a conservation area.
A partnership has been forged with the Arnos Vale Cemetery
Trust, a local community group, who are now operating the
cemetery and will take on the restoration of its landscape
and
structures under licence from Bristol City Council. The Trust
has
been awarded a stage 1 grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund
to
appoint consultants to work up a full stage 2 application for
approximately £3.17m towards a total project cost expected to
be
in excess of £4.23m.
The architect will act as lead consultant to the landscape
architect, structural engineer, quantity surveyor and ecologist,
all
of which now need to be appointed to work up the proposals to
planning, and listed building consent stage. Should the stage
2
application be successful, the consultants would continue to
work
on the phased implementation of the scheme over a period of
approximately 3 yrs.
Regardless of the outcome of stage 2 grant application, the
architect will be expected to complete proposals and manage
the
full restoration of the West Gate Lodge, a grade II* listed
building.
This will become a base for the trust in advance of the main
scheme. This work will be funded initially through English
Heritage
and the City Council.
Consultants interested in tendering must first complete a
prequalification
questionnaire from which not more than 6
consultants from each of the professional disciplines will be
invited
to tender for the work.
