CIOB sets up new board to deal with complaints

The Chartered Institute of Building (CIOB) has established a new Grievance and Appeals Board.

It has also taken the groundbreaking step of approving, in principle, the appointment of an external ombudsman as the final stage in the grievance and appeals process.

The purpose of the Grievance and Appeals Board is to consider and resolve any formal complaint made against the Institute, its members, procedures or processes, except for those relating to professional conduct that are within the remit of the disciplinary committee.

Professor John Bale, a former CIOB President, will be the Board's chairman.

"It is essential that all the Institute's decision making processes are transparent and accountable," he said.

"The new Board will enable those aggrieved by decisions to have their concerns impartially investigated and seek redress.

"It will also ensure that the Institute learns from its mistakes and continually improves its processes. The less the Grievance and Appeals Board has to do, the happier I shall be," said Bale.
