SMP construction focus group

Construction leaders in Scotland are planning to set up a dedicated all-party group within the Scottish Parliament to promote the industry's interests and raise its profile among political decision-makers.

"We are looking to establish a focussed group of members of the Scottish Parliament and top industry representatives," said Sid Patten, chief executive of Scottish Building. "It is not going to be just a talking shop. We will be looking for agreed outcomes. We want to improve the lot of the industry in Scotland and raise awareness of construction among those who make decisions about it.

"Initial issues for discussion are likely to focus on training, health and safety, and procurement."

An application has gone to the Scottish Parliament's standards committee for formal permission to set up the group. A formal launch is expected in October. Invitations to join will be sent to all 127 SMPs.

The initiative also involves the Scottish branch of the Civil Engineering Contractors Association and the Scottish Construction Industry Group (SCIG) Ð the established industry political lobby group.
