SGB launch new edge protection system

SGB has launched a new edge protection system that provides fuller protection on exposed leading edges and conforms to the new requirements in the first ever European Standard for edge protection.

The new standard, prEN13374, is designed to reduce the risk of people falling from unprotected edges, and covers all edge protection systems used during the construction or maintenance of buildings, and for flat and inclined surfaces.

"We believe that Extraguard sets a new standard of edge protection," said SGB's product manager Stuart Bamford. "Feedback from our customers verifies that belief."

Safety has been at the forefront of the design of Extraguard.

"The barrier panel is of robust triple wire construction for extra strength and rigidity, galvanised for corrosion protection and powder-coated in bright yellow for maximum visibility," explained Bamford.

Further safety features include; full mesh edge protection; built in toeboard; and a rigid structural barrier.

"Although it has taken several years to draft the new standard, many contractors will still be taken by surprise when it is introduced," said Bamford. "Until this draft standard was produced, the only comparable legal requirements were those relating to finished, permanent buildings and scaffolding."
