Council slams Amey Highways budget cuts move
Amey Highways' handling of its Scottish roads maintenance contract
has come under the spotlight again this week after it was revealed
that a second council has been told that its budget will be cut for
the coming year,
writes Ross Pearman.
Border Councils told CJ that its funds from Amey, which uses the
council's staff as subcontractors for maintenance work, are to be
scaled back from the £2m budget. A final figure has yet to be
agreed between the parties.
CJ revealed that Dumfries & Galloway Council had its roads
maintenance budget cut from £2.2m to £1.1m because of
what Amey described as "budget cuts" from the Scottish Executive
(CJ 3 September).
The Executive has denied these claims and said that Amey has
"enough funds" to carry out the contract as part of its £300m
road maintenance contract for the south-east and south-west of
Scotland.
Amey refused to comment.
