A design competition for schools, with a prize of £50,000, was
launched last week on the first day of NCW by designer Wayne
Hemingway.
The Creative Spaces competition, developed by
CITB-ConstructionSkills, the sector skills council for the
construction industry, involves 11 to 14 year olds redesigning
their classrooms for the 21st century.
The winning school will receive £50,000 to bring their designs
to life and 12 regional winners will each receive
£3,000.
CITB-ConstructionSkills chief executive Peter Lobban said: "The
idea behind the competition is to give pupils a taste of the
excitement of working in construction and encourage them to be
tomorrow's high-flying architects, managers, carpenters and
bricklayers."
Creative Spaces fits in with the Key Stage 3 Design and Technology
curriculum. The curriculum support materials that accompany the
competition include modules on research, analysis and
computer-aided design and activities that bring construction and
design into the classroom.
So far, 250 schools have registered their interest in the
competition. The deadline for completed submissions is 2 April 2004
and judging of the final designs will take place later that
month.
Hemingway will be on the judging panel with architect David Adjaye.
