Youngsters targeted for demolition course
The National Construction College (NCC), the training division of
the CITB, is introducing a course aimed at 16- to 22-year-olds
working in the demolition sector.
The course is devised by the NCC, CITB and the National Demolition
Training Group and has the backing of the National Federation of
Demolition Contractors.
It starts with a five-week induction block at Bircham Newton
covering health and safety, working at heights and an introduction
to plant.
The remaining 11 weeks are a combination of block training at
Bircham Newton and on-site training with the trainee's employer
that counts towards an NVQ level 2 framework in specialist plant
and machinery operations.
Six companies have put 11 trainees forward for the pilot scheme.
Martin Morrell, training advisor for demolition at the CITB, said
the course is the first of its kind and is expected to become a
modern apprenticeship next year.
