Average site working week tops 46 hours
Construction operatives are working an average 46.5 hours per week,
according to the latest New Earnings Survey published by the Office
of National Statistics.
The 2003 survey points to scaffolders, stagers and riggers working
the longest hours. Their average working week is reported as more
than 51 hours.
The figures for construction manual trades compare with an average
working week of just 39.6 hours in all industries and services.
They also mask big trade and regional variations, with an average
week of 60 hours and more said to be common on sites in London and
the South East.
The latest statistics add fuel to the TUC's campaign to end the
UK's opt-out of a mandatory maximum 48-hour week under the EU
Working Time Directive. The opt-out is under review.
