Only three firms now have a chance of clinching a high-profile
£17m local authority highways scheme in the North West.
Project sources say that Salford City Council has sidelined pitches
from Costain and Nuttall and is now focusing its attentions on
Birse, McAlpine and Mowlem for phase two of the Cadishead Way
deal.
One insider claimed: "The council really will have a tough job on
its hands choosing the winner. This is a real nail-biter. The three
contractors are running neck and neck."
But it is expected that the client will be in a position to make
its final choice by the end of this month or early in
November.
The project will be let on a traditional basis, with the council
undertaking the design work itself. A start on site is programmed
for January, with completion scheduled for 120 weeks.
The scheme includes 2.4km of single carriageway west of the
Manchester Ship Canal and bypassing the A57 Liverpool Road.
A bridge and three junctions also figure in the deal. The winning
contractor will have to deal with cleaning up contaminated land.
