Geoffrey Osborne is the surprise inclusion in the line-up for a
Highways Agency (HA) scheme with a potential value topping
£70m.
The Sussex-based firm figures in the five-strong configuration for
an improvement scheme on the M4 and M5 in south Gloucestershire and
north Somerset.
East Anglian contractor May Gurney has also spread its wings a long
way from its base to feature among the bidders for the
scheme.
The other firms to pick up the tender paperwork have a more
familiar ring - Balfour Beatty, Birse and Nuttall.
An industry observer said: "This is the first time Osborne has gone
for a job of this value, although it already undertakes a lot of
framework contracts for the HA."
He said: "The firm's turnover is increasing at around £20m a
year and it is looking to get involved in larger schemes."
The firm that eventually turns up trumps for the early contractor
involvement project will have to put in a bid strong on
quality.
It is understood that the HA will mark the scheme
80:20 in favour of quality over price.
Initially the scheme is valued at £31m, but it could more than
double that if other schemes are added, as the HA has indicated
this could happen.
At present, the scheme involves constructing four climbing lanes
totalling 14km adjacent to the M4 and M5.
The sites will be junctions 17 to 18A Hallen Hill, junctions 19 to
20 Naish Hill and at Tickenham Hill, all on the M5.
The M4 scheme will be at junction 18. The package could eventually
take in further works worth £41m, but not yet in the roads
programme.
These works include improvements at the Almondsbury Interchange -
9km of widening the M4 between junctions 19 and 20 and the M5
between junctions 16 and 17.
The five bidders have until 18 December to price the job.
