In response to the ever-increasing cost of tyre disposal, Rubber
Recovery, a division of the Montpellier construction group, has
completed trials of its heavy equipment tyre recycler at its
facility in Barnsley.
According to Colin Clements, Rubber Recovery partner, this is the
first time a machine has been developed to process earthmoving and
mining equipment tyres of 1.4m diameter and above.
Although these large tyres are not banned from landfill sites under
recent EU directives, the cost incurred when depositing them can be
substantial.
They also harbour rainwater and as the Health Protection Agency has
recently advised, this creates the perfect breeding ground for
mosquitoes.
"We are offering the only environmentally friendly solution for
large tyres," said Clements. The company's patented recycler is
designed to reduce the tyre and extract both rubber and steel,
rendering both suitable for re-use.
At present the machine is recycling one tyre every two hours, but,
Clements explained: "All tyres are manufactured differently, and as
the process is new, we are still feeling our way.
"However, we have plans for further facilities in the UK, and we've
received enquiries about the process from all over the world."
