Ivor Williams, former executive director of the European
Construction Institute (ECI), has reached a settlement with
Loughborough University after leaving his ECI post earlier this
year in disputed circumstances (CJ 15 January).
Last month Williams put in an employment tribunal claim for
unlawful deductions from wages. The terms of the settlement are
subject to a confidentiality clause.
A former colleague said: "He has been kicked out. Nobody will
explain why. He has been treated in an absolutely appalling
way."
Williams was formerly with the National Economic Development Office
(NEDO) responsible for introducing the concept of partnering in
this country. When NEDO was axed he was instrumental in setting up
the ECI, which is based at and linked with Loughborough.
An agreed statement said Williams pursued a complaint against the
university in connection with his final year's salary. It said he
retired from the ECI in May 2003 and "his contribution has been
vital to its development and growth".
It continued: "His dedication to the success of the ECI and his
hard work has been without question.
"The university wishes to make it clear that at no stage has it
called into question Ivor's conduct or professionalism."
Former ECI benchmarking manager John Hughes said: "It has been
acknowledged that Ivor did nothing wrong. Which begs the question
as to what this was all about."
