George Brumwell, general secretary of UCATT, is expected to succeed Tony Merricks as chairman of the Construction Skills Certification Scheme (CSCS) when it holds its annual general meeting at the end of January.
It is anticipated that the current deputy chairman, TGWU national secretary Bob Blackman, will step down at the same time to make way for an employer nominee in that post.
Merricks told CJ: "The post is subject to an election. Nominations have not yet closed. At the moment there are two individuals in the running. We will know the result on 22 January."
Latest figures from the CSCS indicate that the total number of individuals registered with the CSCS scheme is now approaching 600,000.
The CSCS management board comprises representatives of the employers, the unions, professions, clients, and the Construction Industry Training Board.
George Brumwell is due to retire as UCATT general secretary in
October of 2004. Nominations of candidates to succeed him as leader
of the union will be called early in the new year with an election
to follow in late spring or early summer.
