UCATT fined £130k over official strike

The High Court in London has fined UCATT £130,000 after finding the union guilty of a technical infringement of the law governing official strikes in a dispute involving the Hull-based contractor Willerby Holiday Homes (CJ 24 September).
George Brumwell, UCATT general secretary, said: "This was a score draw. The issue arose as a result of a combination of bad legislation and a cock-up here at regional level.
"We were expecting the result. We were technically wrong in the notification we issued to the company regarding the strike action, but it was worth fighting. We disputed the company's claim that it lost more than £1m in production as a result of the strike. Because of the size of UCATT, we were subject to a maximum fine of £250,000. So we halved that."

He added: "The legislation is very complex. And it has subsequently been changed because it was too arduous. But you are tiptoeing through a minefield here."
The official strike at Willerby Holiday Homes occurred in March 2001, following a workforce ballot.
