One man has been killed instantly and another worker seriously injured following an accident at the £757m Wembley Stadium project today (Thursday).

Early reports indicate that at approximately 8am a tower crane load struck a platform which collapsed on to the workers below.

Work has been stopped so the police and the Health & Safety Executive (HSE) can begin an investigation.

It is thought that the dead man, who has not been named, works for concrete subcontractor PC Harrington.

Bob Blackman national secretary for construction at Transport and General Workers' Union(T&G) said: "We are deeply saddened by the news that two of our members were involved in today's incident at Wembley, and that one has been killed as a result.
