Wembley's designs will lead to overcrowding, claim residents

Residents near the £757m Wembley Stadium development are raising concerns that plans for the project have been "dramatically changed".

According to the BBC today (Thursday) the new designs for the north London site now contains too many homes and would lead to overcrowding.

Anne Tremmink, from the Wembley Hill Residents' Association, told the BBC that the current plans, supported by mayor Ken Livingstone's London Development Agency and Brent Council, would see around 4,000 new homes built in the area.

Developers say only 500 new homes would be created.

Work on the new 90,000-seat stadium began in September 2002 and is expected to finish in 2006.

Proposals to redevelop the area linking it to the town centre will be put to Brent Council at the end of January and the council will consult widely from mid-February.

If approved, work would begin in October, to be completed in time for the stadium's opening.
