Building Research Establishment (BRE) will
demonstrate new guidance on the interface between the building
fabric and perimeter passive chilled beams in March.
"Using perimeter chilled beams to offset solar gains can be a very
efficient way of reducing the need for full air-conditioning and
employing free cooling methods. But because of a fundamental
difficulty in predicting the interactions between interior
structural elements and air flow patterns in the perimeter zone,
there have been a high number of incidences where designs have
failed to meet performance targets," said BRE.
BRE investigated a number of system mock-ups to identify why these
were failing, then developed and tested alternative design
solutions.
The half-day seminar on 24 March will discuss the reasons why
performance targets are not being met, explain the new guidance,
and demonstrate effective designs.
