Newcastle scales down highways job
Newcastle City Council has cut the highways partnering deal it
first advertised 12 months ago by 90%.
The council has now also repackaged the scheme, which originally
spanned five to seven years and was potentially worth up to
£280m.
The scheme has been hacked down to a mere two to three years and is
now worth £12m at most to contractors.
An insider said: "The council was originally trying to see five to
seven years into the future - a well-nigh impossibility. A two to
three-year plan gives it much more security and control."
The council hopes to shortlist firms to bid for the deal in March,
with tenders due to go out the following month.
The scope of the work includes civil engineering construction,
structural repairs and maintenance, plus surfacing.
