Thames seeks £1bn extra for water mains
Contractors bidding for AMP 4 water contracts with Thames Water
(TW) can expect an increase in workload of around £1bn over
five years.
Thames is due to submit its £3.5bn business plan to Ofwat in
April, which will include the need for extra funds for priority
work on Victorian water mains in central London, a third of which
are more than 150 years old and more than half over 100 years old.
Since 1989, the bulk of TW's £6bn investment programme has
been devoted to improving drinking water and the quality of waste
water. Only £53m has been spent on replacing 110km of water
mains so far.
A decision on the plan is expected in November this year before the
new contracts start in April 2005.
Current TW alliance contractors Murphy and Clancy Docwra are in
discussions with the client to see how the increased programme
could be rolled out.
