Mott MacDonald has been appointed by the
Construction Industry Research and Information Association (CIRIA)
to lead research into accelerated low water corrosion (ALWC).
ALWC is an aggressive, localised form of corrosion that has been
occurring on unprotected marine structures for approximately the
last 20 years.
It affects structures at or around the low
water level. If left untreated, it causes premature perforation of
the steel resulting in often expensive remedial works and has the
potential to cause failure of quays and other structures.
CIRIA has commissioned a guidance document for the management of
ALWC on steel marine structures to offer advice to engineers, port
owners, operators and designers on how to manage this
problem.
Mott MacDonald is leading a team of experienced researchers,
consultants and contractors to produce the guide, which will be
available in spring 2005.
