Emcor denies Scottish retreat

Emcor Drake & Scull is not pulling out of the Scottish M&E market - although chief executive Tony Whale has admitted conditions in Scotland are tough.

Whale was quick to deny rumours that Emcor Drake & Scull planned to pull back to working only south of the border. "What we have done, in the face of dropping turnover, is combine Scotland and the North-East of England areas into a single business unit, managed out of Sunderland," Whale said.

"The process of putting our service requirement elements, such as estimators, under the guidance of a single director is still taking place. We've just started new jobs in Scotland, such as the Royal Observatory, which shows we are looking for work.

"Scottish M&E turnover wasn't just dropping for us, but it's the same for all the other players as there is overcapacity in Scotland and has been for a year or 18 months. The issue is the volume of work and the rates it is going for. You have to be selective," Whale said.
