Norwest Holst wins £28.4m Baldock Bypass

Norwest Holst Construction has been awarded a £28.4m contract to construct a dual carriageway bypass around Baldock town centre, in Hertfordshire.

Work on the contract, awarded by Hertfordshire County Council on a design and construct basis, involves the construction of 6.5km of dual carriageway, 1.5m3 of excavations, seven reinforced concrete structures plus a 230m long twin bore cut and cover tunnel. The bypass will take 24 months to complete.

Measures will be taken to preserve the local flora and fauna in consultation with the Hertfordshire Biological Records Centre and other environmental bodies.

Badger tunnels, together with lengths of badger and deer proof fencing, will be provided and rare plants identified along the route will be transplanted to other nearby areas not affected by the road.

Most of the excavated material will be used on site to form road embankments or environmental mounds which will also help reduce the movement of lorries on local roads.
