Mott MacDonald awarded Crossrail role

Mott MacDonald has been awarded the Systems and Rolling Stock Technical Advisor contract for Crossrail line 1.

Cross London Rail Links (CLRL) chief executive officer Norman Haste said: "This contract is for engineering design consultants to undertake railway systems, rolling stock, mechanical and electrical design services in order to prepare a Parliamentary Bill."

"Subsequently it will be for the procurement of a design and build concession (or concessions) for the construction of Crossrail line 1," he added.

Following this, Mott MacDonald would assist with the assessment of tenders for the concessions and provide advice on the fitness for purpose of proposals received and act as the promoter's representative during the construction and commissioning phases.

CLRL has also identified a preferred location at Romford Railway Goods Yard and Gasworks for a train maintenance depot for Crossrail. This followed detailed analysis of a number of options, one being between Harold Wood and Brentwood, next to the M25.

"The CLRL project team have concluded that a potential maintenance depot site near Romford would minimise some of the planning and environmental effects of the depot's construction compared with other options," said Haste.

"The preferred location raises some significant planning, environmental and operational issues that will be evaluated more thoroughly with key stakeholders including the London Borough of Havering, Environment Agency, Network Rail, community groups and relevant property owners," he added.
