Construction worker dead after falling down lift shaft

A construction worker has died after falling 15m down a lift shaft on the University Hospitals Coventry and Warwickshire NHS Trust hospital project site in Coventry.

The accident at Walsgrave Hospital, which is being investigated by the Health & Safety Executive, is believed to have involved a man in his 50's. The victim has not been named.

The man was working on the £330m superhospital being built off Clifford Bridge Road by Skanska. Work started on site last year and is due for completion in 2007.

A spokesman for the HSE said: "It is very early days at the moment but we have had investigators on site this afternoon and a joint investigation with the police has been launched."

Skanska spokesman Tanya Barnes said: "The matter is under investigation and we are unable to comment further at this time."
