Rydon Homes stops work on Brighton site
Work on Rydon Homes' mixed-use scheme in the centre of Brighton has
come to an abrupt halt as the development's viability has come into
question.
Rydon was given permission in September 2002 by Brighton and Hove
City Council to provide 64 homes, 19 of them low-cost, shopping
facilities,
a food and drink outlet, offices, a live/work unit and 46 parking
spaces.
The plan also included money towards improving West Street, artwork
in the development and recreational improvements at nearby schools
and St Nicholas playground.
Rydon has demolished all the existing buildings on a large site in
West Street.
A spokesman said: "Work on the Rydon site at West Street has been
suspended, while a reappraisal of the proposals is conducted as a
result of technical and financial difficulties that have emerged.
This process is likely to take a few months."
