Council set to discuss Glass Needle plan

Plans for a glass needle tower in Cardiff are to be put before Cardiff Council next week.

Two run-down empty buildings that used to be Cardiff Council offices could be demolished to make way for the development.

Developer Heritage Gateway has applied for permission from the council's planning committee to build four tower blocks ranging from two to 15 storeys high, wrapped around a 24-storey glass and steel 'needle' tower.

The 91m-high, multi-million pound development in Wood Street, includes 188 flats, an elevated garden and underground basement parking.

The developer, in negotiation with Cardiff Council, has agreed to put forward £250,000 as part of a Section 106 planning agreement, if the proposal is passed next week.

If permission is granted, then £125,000 of that contribution will go towards the provision of public art to link that area with the rest of the city.

The remaining contribution will be put towards proposed works in Bute Park as part of a wider Heritage Lottery scheme.
